REI Systems Co-Founder Salona Receives 2008 Federal 100 Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Federal Computer Week Magazine Recognizes REI Executive

HERNDON, VA, April 3, 2008 – REI Systems (REI) announced today that Shyam Salona, REI’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, was recognized by Federal Computer Week (FCW).  Salona received a Federal 100 Award for his shepherding the launch of USASpending.gov – the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) sponsored initiative supporting the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act (Transparency Act), which requires a single searchable website to provide free public access to each Federal award, including government contracts, grants, and other award data.

Each year, the Federal 100 Awards recognize individuals from government, industry and academia who had the greatest impact on government information technology.  An overview of the awards and the list of those honored can be accessed at http://www.fcw.com/events/fed100/2008/index.html.  Salona was recognized for his support of the launching of USAspending.gov – a public database about federal spending.  Because of various procurement and technical challenges, Salona’s Web design and development firm faced aggressive deadlines for loading, validating and testing the site’s data and functionality.  Working around the clock, REI completed its work ahead of the project’s Jan. 1, 2008 deadline.  “They overcame the challenges in part because they acknowledged that there are 24 hours in every day,” said Tim Young, the Office of Management and Budget’s deputy administrator for e-government and information technology.

Salona co-founded REI Systems with President Veer Bhartiya in 1989 when they were awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract by NASA to develop an innovative technology to support complex distributed databases.  “Shyam’s vision, leadership, and solution-oriented approach have been essential elements of REI’s growth and success,” says Veer Bhartiya.  “REI has been recognized as an Inc. 500 company multiple times, highlighted as an SBA success story, featured as a NASA Hallmark of Success, and now we are honored to have a Federal 100 award winner.  Shyam best exemplifies REI’s focus on its mission of delivering results, empowering people, and making a difference.”

Salona attended the March 24th Awards Gala at the Ritz Carlton, in McLean VA where he received the award.  “A tremendous team of dedicated individuals from OMB, REI, and SRA Touchstone  combined to complete the launch of USAspending.gov.  This capability which OMB has provided will provide taxpayers with full and complete transparency into government spending.” said Salona “This award belongs to each and every member of the team that worked so hard to make the launch a success.  I am proud to have been able to support such an important initiative.”
